About DEWG

Digital ethnography is a burgeoning field of research, and the goal of the Digital Ethnography Working Group is to develop a deeper understanding of how people live in this digital era and uncover the most innovative methods to study digital communication, information, and media firsthand. To establish SC&I at the forefront of digital ethnography, this working group provides outstanding support, training, and visibility to faculty and graduate students interested in this evolving research area.

Key Aims

  • To bring together faculty and doctoral students within SC&I and beyond to share fieldwork experiences, write regularly, build fellowship, and grow and guide this area of research.

  • To support graduate students with cutting-edge training in digital and traditional ethnographic fieldwork methods and ethnographic writing. By offering weekly (remote) writing groups, internal meetings to present and discuss in-progress fieldwork and writing, and hosting and cohosting with other ethnography groups public events on new ethnographic books and emerging issues, DEWG can enhance current training opportunities available through workshops and course offerings at SC&I, including Ethnography, Qualitative Methods, and Writing as Craft and Profession.

  • Building a network of digital ethnographers across discipline and career stage through partnerships with other groups and labs, hosting summer institutes and retreats on campus, and inviting as fellows external faculty and doctoral students who are doing outstanding digital ethnography from different perspectives.
